London’s Southbank Centre has a new outdoor logo projection and LED lighting systems supplied by A.C. Special Projects Ltd. Situated on the south bank of the River Thames next to the London Eye, Southbank Centre is one of the largest single-run arts centres in the world. Featuring the Royal Festival Hall, Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall (containing the Purcell Room) and the Saison Poetry Library, the Centre’s wide-ranging programme of music, literature and the visual arts attracts a diverse audience. The ideal installation scenario involves plenty of advance input from the sound system designer to ensure smooth integration of the system into the space.

But often that’s not possible, due to a room’s power, lighting, HVAC, or other systems being placed before the sound system is considered. That’s the situation Donovan Mote of Phoenix, Arizona’s Pro Production Services faced when he got the opportunity to provide a sound system for The Showroom, a 750-seat cabaret-style/ concert venue at Talking Stick Resort and Casino in Scottsdale, AZ. Luckily, the casino pointed to an Electro-Voice-equipped room in Las Vegas as an example of how good they wanted the new room to sound. And because the Electro-Voice line features a huge variety of highly compatible components, Mote had the flexibility to find just the right elements to work within The Showroom’s existing constraints. After more than 20 years of providing sound reinforcement systems for both regional and national productions, North Hollywood-based US Audio and Lighting reports that it has expanded with the addition of a new Northern California satellite office and shop under the direction of Patrick Coughlin. In tandem with the news, the company also announces that it has grown its equipment inventory with the recent acquisition of four L-Acoustics LA-RAK touring racks each loaded with three LA8 amplified controllers.

The 8th edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest was held on 20th November at the Minsk Arena in the Belarus capital. Billed as one of the most modern arenas in Europe, the venue played host to young performers aged between ten and 15 from 14 different countries, who performed in front of an enthusiastic audience of 15,000 people. The show was also broadcast live to more than 40 million people in 15 countries around Europe. In audio terms, the production is every bit complex as its big brother and saw no less than four Innovason digital mixing systems deployed to handle FOH and monitor mixing as well as audio distribution to the OB trucks. Broadcast mixing was handled by a Lawo MC66 console. Home to approximately 800 Inuit and a handful of southerners, the municipality of Kugaaruk brushes up against the Arctic Ocean, in the far northern Nunavut Territory of Canada. It is the location of Canada's coldest recorded wind chill (-78 degrees Celsius) and a place where the day is seldom punctuated by a rising or setting sun.

It is also the location of very favorable seal hunting and a place where polar bear sightings are commonplace. In their meetings every two weeks, Kugaaruk council members rely on a conference system so that Christopher Amautinuar can translate between English and Inuktitut. Kugaaruk recently replaced an aged and problematic conference system with a new Sennheiser conference system that delivers spoken word with perfect clarity and intelligibility. Nearly 90 Clay Paky motorised spotlights were used in the Italian television variety show “I Migliori Anni” (The Best Years).

The programme is directed by Maurizio Pagnussat and hosted by Carlo Conti, and consists of a tele-voting competition between pieces of music from different decades. The contest between the decades (1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s) takes place with the participation of several guest musicians, and is an opportunity to commemorate historical events and famous celebrities who appeared on the television of the era. As 2010 heads toward a conclusion, Bandit Lites continues to move toward a 100% LED solution, as is its focus. The very fact that the business and indeed the world must find suitable, energy efficient, sustainable illumination solutions has been driving the staff at Bandit for almost two years now. There have been a great many developments and paradigm shifts within Bandit and within the lighting industry. Everywhere you look you see more and more LED solutions coming into the market, and no one is dong more in that area to lead by example than Bandit Lites.

The development of a new product range in conjunction with Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) and GRNLite has proved to be beneficial to Bandit. Bandit has also worked with Phillips – Vari-Lite, Tyler Truss, GLP, Coemar, Color Kinetics, Pixel Range, Element Labs, Chroma Q, I-Pix and others to bring a wide array of LED offerings to the market. 2011 will see a big commitment from Bandit Lites to I-Pix and their high quality range of products, helping move with them into the new decade. When production meetings began for the Bob Dylan Fall Tour, a few challenges for the lighting design would become evident. First, the tour would be playing venues that varied greatly in size and location; and second, at a Bob Dylan show one thing is clear; it’s all about the music.

Super Utilities Pro is a package of tools for everyday use: finding and deleting unnecessary files, clean and optimize the registry, startup manager, folder protection, backup, analysis folders, a useful extension of the Explorer context menu, the means for complete removal of obsolete software manager processes, IE Privacy Manager, and much more.

While many tours may rely heavily on colour changes, strobe effects, columns of light or intense video, this tour would rely on the opposite, simplicity. To overcome these challenges, the production team turned to their long time tour provider TMS who brought in 35 Vari.Lite luminaires. The current Kings of Leon world tour features another innovative design by LD Paul Normandale with all lighting controlled by a grandMA full-size console. Normandale specified the grandMA - as he does on many of his shows - for its stability and reliability. The lighting is being operated and looked after on the road by director Ali Bale - using a grandMA for the first time. Another grandMA light is being supplied by XL Video to run the Catalyst media server playing back video content. ESTA has started work on a new project to write an American National Standard: BSR E1.42 – 201x, Entertainment Technology – Installed Stage Lift Safety Standard.

Stage lifts, such as orchestra pit or theatre forestage lifts, are not the subject of any current national standard. As result, safety requirements and inspections of them are inconsistent. This project is to develop a standard for stage lifts that can be referenced by the International Code Council and the National Fire Protection Association. The scope is limited to safety and to lifts that are installed as a part of the building and that are not for a single theatrical production.

Any person involved in the design, manufacture, use, or inspection of stage lifts and who is willing to actively work on the project is invited to join the new working group. A working group application form is available on the ESTA website at. QSC Audio Products, LLC has introduced the GX7 as the newest model in its popular GX Series of power amplifiers. One of the highlights of Pope Benedict XVI’s recent visit to the UK was an open air Mass and the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, held at Birmingham’s Cofton Park.

The event, which was attended by 52,000 pilgrims, had a requirement for an extensive sound reinforcement system, together with induction loop systems to accommodate the hard of hearing, thus ensuring that the Pontiffs message was clearly heard by the entire congregation. The client’s brief dictated the requirement for the installation of a custom designed induction loop system, the largest temporary system ever designed by manufacturer Ampetronic.

Over 35 years ago Randy and Carol Pope founded Perimeter Church in the Atlanta metro area. Hotel magnate Cecil B. Day, originator of the Day’s Inn chain of “budget-luxury” hotels, rented space to the fledgling church for a mere $50 month and helped propel Perimeter Church to its current success.

Now standing on ninety-five acres, Perimeter Church operates a complex of utilitarian buildings for all manner of functions and ministries, including nine auditoriums. But until recently, the campus was missing a beautiful chapel to host special services, events and weddings. That changed this year, with the christening of the Cecil B. Day Chapel, a 475-seat sanctuary of gorgeous wood, stone, and stained glass below a vaulted wooden ceiling. To complement the visual aesthetic, Steve Simmons, director of technical ministries at Perimeter Church, built the sound system around Danley Sound Labs full-range loudspeakers, subwoofers, and stage monitors.

Recently opened Ferrari World, the world’s largest theme park and the first and only Ferrari theme park in the world, is located in Abu Dhabi and featured a multiplex of driving-related attractions, thrill rides, and, of course, a racetrack. The structure is massive, covering fifty acres with a unique red dome roof adorned by a massive Ferrari logo. In a distinctive break from the well-trodden theme park music motif, celebrated composer Julian Scott was commissioned to write and record themes for the “factory” section of the new park. His cues are replayed in surround sound and synchronised to both the ride dynamics and the high-definition video replays. Scott recorded the pieces at famed Abbey Road studios, relying on Metric Halo ULN-8 and 2882+DSP converters to capture the enormously expensive session in stunning quality, without hiccup.

Placement was critical, requiring not just detailed measurements, but also a system that would enable careful manoeuvring for the final placement of the platforms.Unusual’s project manager, Leon Ingram, devised a hoist system which comprised a run of square truss and a runner beam carrying two hoists for each platform, thus enabling fine adjustments to be made both laterally and vertically. The bare platforms were first offered to the wall and positioned to enable the bolt holes to be pre-drilled. They were then lowered back to the ground, where the cars were fitted by the Ferrari team. The SFH 7770 from Osram Opto Semiconductors combines the functions of a digital ambient light sensor with those of a digital proximity sensor. It determines the ambient brightness, detects the presence of an object nearby and can even tell whether the object is moving closer or moving further away. It means that applications in cell phones and smartphones for example can be controlled without touching the phone. Apps open like magic, and the brightness and volume are adjusted at precisely the right moment. Since the beginning of May, American heavy metallers Manowar, Guinness World Record holders for being the loudest band in the world, have been performing their Death to Infidels World Tour 2010 around the globe.

The team from management company Magic Circle Music, with Jeff Hair from Aggressive Sound at front of house, have been with the band throughout. However, monitor engineer Achim Lanzendorf and his DiGiCo SD9, provided by production company B&R Medientechnik, joined them for part of the European leg. Rahman is one of the most talented composers and musicians working in the film and music industries today. While his film scores and soundtracks for blockbuster Indian and international titles have sold over 350 million CDs and cassettes around the world, he is perhaps best known for scoring Slumdog Millionaire, the darling of the 2009 Academy Awards. The Slumdog Millionaire score and soundtrack earned Rahman a Golden Globe, two Oscars, and two Grammys, among many other awards.

The soundtrack peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 and hooked millions of fans on its runaway hit, “Jai Ho!”. Achieving high-quality event sound is always an accomplishment, but it becomes more of a challenge as the complexities of the overall production increase. The recent Canadian Country Music Association awards show, for example, involved not simply a talent-packed roster of more than a dozen artists, but also the complication of a nationwide broadcast on CBC, making lighting a big priority for the show’s producers.

And while audio was by no means marginalized, it was imperative that setup be fast and sightlines be unimpaired. An Electro-Voice sound reinforcement system, designed and provided by the Winnipeg office of leading Canadian event and installation company Sound Art, fit the bill on both counts.' We’ve been an EV house for a long time,' says Sound Art technical projects manager Iain Graham. 'Their gear is very reliable, and EV is consistently evolving their processing, so their speaker systems keep sounding better and better.' Graham designed the system in Electro-Voice’s Line Array Prediction Software (LAPS) and directed on-site setup. FOH mixing was handled by Toronto-based freelancer Peter Stoynich, while the mix on the EV Xw12 stage monitors was handled by Gerald Sawchuk, also of Sound Art Winnipeg, with Chase Tower and Dave Coe from Sound Art Calgary on RF and patch, respectively.

Mike Noga, an independent technician from Edmonton was the fifth member of the Sound Art crew. The CCMA awards show was held for an audience of about 8000 at the Rexall Place hockey arena in Edmonton, Alberta. The CBC simulcast, Graham says, meant that lighting had a bigger-than-usual impact on the placement and setup of the system. 'Between the stage and the audience, there was a lot of lighting, which meant a lot of hanging truss ending right about where the PA needed to go. So there were issues of where I could fly the line arrays, and how big a rig I could fly. There were issues of trim height as well, because you can’t block the lighting rig.' To keep the PA as small as possible without compromising on sound, Graham used left/right main arrays that were each made up of 12 XLC127DVX three-way, high-output loudspeakers.

'The XLCs give us good sound in a small package, and that was a big help,' he says. 'And the array was quite forgiving when we flew it high to clear the lights. The XLCs are so consistent and intelligible that you don’t lose much by having the array a little farther away. So we were able to get them up out of the way and they still performed very effectively.' Graham also credits EV’s rigging system with helping to work around the placement issues.

'The rigging design makes it easy to angle the box and also allows you to get more down-angle than you can get from a lot of other boxes,' he says. 'Once we had points and our looms laid out on the cable truss, arraying the boxes was simple and fast. Over 90 points total were being flown that day, so being able to fly the arrays quickly kept our client very happy.' For side fill, each XLC array was flanked with a 12-box array of XLD281 loudspeakers.

'The XLDs integrate really well with the XLCs despite being smaller,' Graham says. 'That makes them perfect for a side hang in situations like this one, where sight lines and lighting truss cannot be blocked.' An additional four XLDs were positioned as single boxes across the downstage edge, and two stacked pairs were used for offstage ground fill.

'They're small and they sound great even as single boxes,' Graham says, 'so they're perfect for fill in situations where it's impossible to use the optimum positioning. The boxes were below the downstage lip, but I was able to get the coverage I needed without overpowering the first row of seating.' For low end, Graham used 20 Xsub dual 18-inch subwoofers.

Two per side were used for ground fill, with the remaining 16 flown in a center cluster. 'I did the subs in the center because real estate in the downstage corners was in short supply,' he says. 'The Xsubs are solid and smooth.

I’ve never had a situation where I’ve had any trouble making them sound good, even in a reverberant arena like the Rexall Center. They sounded great, and because of the rigging system they were quick and easy to hang.' The system was controlled and monitored via Electro-Voice’s NetMax N8000-1500 digital matrix controller, and powered by a combination of Precision Series and Tour Grade amplifiers. 'I used NetMax to send the basic feed from the console to the various zones of the PA,' Graham says, 'and also as the crossover for the main arrays.

That allowed me to use FIR filtering with the Precision Series amplifiers. Being able to process the PA as a whole system before the signal moves on to the remote DSP for zone control is a valuable feature. I can quickly and easily adapt the system to the room and then fine-tune each zone of the PA as I go, all within the same processing environment.' The Precision Series amps, used for the main arrays and subs, included 10 standard P3000s and 28 P3000RLs with on-board DSP. The P3000RLs provided zone trim, EQ, and monitoring. Pairing each standard P3000 with a P3000RL, Graham was able to ensure consistent sound by feeding the input of the P3000 with processed audio from the DSP out of the P3000RL.The XLD zones, meanwhile, were powered by TG-5 amplifiers featuring RCM-26 IRIS-Net compatible DSP and control modules. 'The DSP power in the RCM 26 cards is amazing,' Graham says.

'Having the horsepower required for FIR filtering in each amp channel makes the system extremely flexible and easy to manage. Plus you also have zone EQ, time, level, et cetera, and you are able to see the load and temperature of every amp channel. It's unbeatable.' Graham’s enthusiasm is shared by Stoynich, who’s now mixed a number of comparable events on similarly configured Electro-Voice PAs supplied by Sound Art. 'I really like the clarity of this system,' he says.

'It sounds very natural without overemphasizing anything. We’ve had a great response from the audience and performers alike at several awards shows like this. Sound Art and EV have always come through with fantastic results.'

Bandit Lites had the distinct honor of being a part of an historical event when the Grand Ole Opry House needed to be restored following last spring’s devastating Nashville flood. The day the rains stopped, and before the water started to recede, Opry lighting director Tyler Bryan and other Opry staff were inside the Opry House in canoes.

The entire stage and seating area was under several feet of water. The devastation the floodwaters left behind was unimaginable. One of the first calls Tyler made was to national director of sales & installations Chris Barbee to begin the task of restoring the storied building. The world-famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, national theatre of Russia and home to the Bolshoi Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and the Bolshoi Opera, is presently closed to its millions of annual visitors while undergoing extensive renovations. The doors were shut to the main building in 2005 and it is scheduled to reopen in a year’s time. The theatre has undergone many renovations in its time, but nothing anywhere near as major as this undertaking which is estimated at US$730 million and is being entirely funded by the federal government.

Touring in nine arenas across the UK, Dr Who Live is in full swing. With 23 dates currently confirmed and multiple shows per day in main venues the tour needed a stage floor that could resist extermination. Le Marks Consor floor was ideal, with its inner mineral fibre insert, designed for touring shows, rolling out flat, quickly and easily, time and time again.

The low profile Consor Stage Floor (only 1.7mm thick) resists indentations allowing heavy items such as camera dollies, flightcases and the odd Dalek to roll over the floor with minimal drag. Most scuffs and marks are also easily removed with Le Mark’s specialist cleaners keeping the floor looking fresh and presentable. “We’re now well into the tour and so far the floor has been brilliant, it works really well with the shows lighting and was a doddle to install” says Lianne Bruce, BBC deputy production manager for Dr Who Live Tour. Six weeks isn’t much time to go from an initial customer inquiry to having PA systems on-site and ready to rig. But when Pyxis Industries in Riverside, California was asked by North Coast Church to bid on the design and installation of sound systems at two different locations, owner Chad Costanzo didn’t hesitate. “These installations had to come together extremely quickly,” Costanzo says. “But our past experience with Electro-Voice gave us total confidence that everything would work out fine.

And it did.”. In 2007 the Health and Safety Laboratory on behalf of HSE conducted tests on two types of 13mm, Grade 8 Long Link Chains, one manufactured by the Columbus McKinnon Corporation (with the trade name 'Special Theatrical Alloy Chain' (STAC)), and the other thought to have been manufactured by The Crosby Group. As of October 2010, HSE and the Health and Safety Laboratory, Buxton have been made aware that Crosby Group USA, and Crosby Europe did not manufacture 13 mm Long Link G8 Chain in 2007, or prior to that. White Light has recently helped the Regent’s College Conference Centre in central London upgrade its lighting system with some of the very latest lighting and control technology. They have supplied the centre with ten Coemar Parlite LED fixtures in silver.

A great replacement for the traditional PAR can, the ParLite LED offers three-colour mixing and interchangeable lenses offering beam angles ranging from the standard 12 degrees up to a 110 degree flood, all in a compact fixture that weighs just 3.5kg. The fixture requires dramatically less power than traditional lighting fixtures, and unlike some competing fixtures has no fan, meaning that it is silent in operation and maintenance-free.

The Regent’s College ParLites were supplied with the optional IP65 rear panel kit, which converts the fixture for use outdoors. Just past its tenth birthday and The Lowry at Salford Quays in Salford has something to celebrate by having the first installation anywhere in the UK of d&b audiotechnik's latest E6 loudspeaker. At first glance it’s not the most monumental reason to celebrate, but there is some significant history here.

The E6 replaces the E3, d&b audiotechnik's most popular loudspeaker ever, and by universal acclaim its most utilitarian model. It is a fact that you will find E3s in many thousands of theatres and concert halls all over the world and many of them have been there for two decades. It was a direct lightening strike that brought the original building for Albright United Methodist Church in Mishawaka, Indiana to the ground, and it was three years after the fire before the congregation had a new permanent sanctuary. Like any complete re-visioning, Albright seized the opportunity to build a church that would meet its unique needs perfectly. The lovely new 450-seat sanctuary provides a well-functioning home to a range of ministries, activities, and classes nearly every day and night of the week, including both traditional and contemporary services on the weekend. To minimize the logistically complicated need for technical staff at all of the various functions, Albright turned to northern Indiana/southern Michigan A/V designers and installers Last Pew Sound Engineering to design an A/V system that would largely take care of itself via intuitive user-interfaces that even technology-challenged church members could easily command.

Last Pew turned to a Symetrix Automix Matrix 780 signal processor with Symetrix ARC wall panel controllers to deliver sophisticated functionality with simple controls at a very affordable price. After reading this story, every FOH mixer will be begging for his or her own personal Doug Lemke/SpectraFoo combo for the holidays. In a nutshell, Lemke’s recent outing with enduring 80s pop-rock legend Tears For Fears epitomised the challenge that FOH engineers are forced to confront over and over again – as if in a bad dream!

– different venues and different PAs from night to night conspired to threaten the repeatability of veteran engineer JB Blot’s otherwise studio-worthy mix. But Lemke provided a robust solution to this timeless trial. He used the power and nuance of Metric Halo’s SpectraFoo audio analysis software to tune each disparate system to match the sonic fingerprint of Blot’s reference Genelec nearfield monitors. Clay Paky fixtures shone brightly on Malaysia’s top entertainers in Malaysia as they gathered to celebrate the prestigious 24th Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL). Often dubbed as the most reputable and respected local music award, this annual affair is attended by the who’s who in the local music scene. Held in Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur and organised and produced by local television station, TV3, the show is fortunate enough to be graced by the presence of celebrities such as Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Misha Omar, Aleya, Bunkface, Black, Hujan, Aizat Amdan, and Stacy. Needless to say, this year’s event was another high-profiled star-studded affair.

The 2010 Mark Knopfler Get Lucky World Tour continued a long relationship between Bandit Lites and the award-winning superstar. Designer Simon Tutchener once again called on Bandit UK CE Lester Cobrin to handle the global needs for Knopfler and his entourage. On this jaunt around the globe, the show was as brilliant as ever, with Knopfler pulling hit after hit from a lengthy career of rock classics.

Tour manager Tim Hook and production manager Kevin Hopgood ran the well-oiled machine as it jetted around the world. Manager Paul Crockford again assembled a professional team to guide the show each day. Orbital Sound supplied the sound systems for The Railway Children production, being staged in the spectacular setting of London’s Waterloo Station. The station’s former Eurostar platforms have been transformed into a 1000-seat theatre, with the audience sitting traverse style along a 40m length of platform, either side of the track. Given the audience size and layout, and the constraints of the working-station environment, delivering quality audio required an innovative approach – resulting in four distinct systems, all using d&b audiotechnik loudspeakers, and employing complex routing and delays. The show is also among the first UK theatre productions to utilise the moisture-resistant properties of Da-Cappo Micro Microphones, distributed by Orbital in the UK.
